Denim: Origin and Global Influence
Denim fabric has its origins in France. Initially, denim began life as a fabric known as “serge de Nimes.” It was created to be a long-lasting and robust fabric that was initially conceived in Italy. This material was known as ‘jean’ or ‘jeane,’ and it became the initial blueprint for Levi jeans. Levi Strauss & Co., founded in 1853, was selling only clothes, boots, and other goods to small retail stores. In 1873, together with a tailor named Jacob Davis, Levi was granted a patent to manufacture riveted for strength work-wear made of blue denim. Soon, they began manufacturing copper riveted waist overalls out of a brown cotton duck and blue denim, marking the birth of denim jeans. Even though it originated in Europe, the durability and adaptable form of denim found a perfect home in the United States. For decades, jeans remained mainly work-wear, especially prized by miners, cowboys, and farmers for their strength and durability. In the 1930s and 1940s, however, jeans began to enter popular culture thanks to Hollywood’s Western films. After World War II, jeans began to gain popularity among young Americans. Jeans were seen as a symbol of American culture, associated with freedom, rebellion, and the American dream. European youth, fascinated by the icons of American cinema and rock’n’roll music, quickly adopted jeans as part of their daily wardrobe. This period marked the beginning of the spread of jeans throughout Europe.
In the 1960s and 1970s, from Italy, France, to Germany, jeans became a symbol of rebellion, resistance, and social change.
Top Denim Suppliers in the World: A Brief Overview
Mexico is the leading supplier of raw denim pants (before finishing), followed by China and Bangladesh. These three countries account for over 66% of raw denim imported into the US. Most of the imported blue denim was considered low or mid-tier price points. Denim finishing, which gives a considerable value-added price to denim products, is located in Los Angeles. Imported denim jeans typically sell for mid-tier price points in which the average consumer spends 35 USD. The US is a major exporter of textiles and finished denim jeans. The EU varies slightly from the US with imports; Asian countries, including China, Turkey, and Bangladesh, are the major denim export countries to the EU. European denim apparel companies, including Armani Jeans, export denim jeans throughout the world.

Bangladesh’s Denim Industry
Bangladesh is now one of the top countries in the world for making denim clothes like jeans and jackets. During the 1990s, global brands began sourcing denim jeans from Bangladesh because of low labor costs, a skilled sewing workforce, and large-scale production capacity. Today, Bangladesh is responsible for producing almost a quarter of all jeans and denim jackets sold globally. In the beginning, denim fabric was imported, mainly from countries like Japan, Hong Kong, and later China. To reduce dependency on imported fabric and shorten lead time, local entrepreneurs began investing in denim mills. During the early 2000s, spinning, weaving, dyeing, and finishing units were established across the country. Since then, Bangladesh’s denim sector has experienced significant growth and reached a peak level of global competitiveness.
Now, Bangladesh has ranked as the second largest denim garments manufacturer and exporter after China. Bangladesh is trading approximately 200 million pieces annually. According to BTMA, Bangladesh has around 30 denim fabric manufacturing mills, which manufacture over 435 million yards of fabric per year. From which Bangladesh can meet about 60% fabric demand of the existing around 550 denim ready-made garment factories in the country.
